On behalf of my City Council colleagues and all Calgarians, I am pleased to extend a warm welcome to everyone taking part in the 2023 FascinAsian Film Festival!
The FascinAsian Film Festival is proudly unique to the prairies, and Calgary is equally proud to be the co-host city, along with Winnipeg! This year’s theme, The Year of the Rabbit – The Year of Finding Joy, completely captures the absolute joy of celebrating Asian-Canadian perspectives, culture and identity, through the lens of Asian-Canadian filmmakers and screen-based talent. Kim’s Convenience brought Asian culture into our homes through the brilliance of creator Ins Choi, whose two-day writing workshop promises to be but one of the many high-energy and inspirational events ahead.
As we recognize Asian Heritage Month during the month of May, it’s important to note the significant part the festival continues to play in Calgary’s dynamic arts and culture scene. Having an outlet for Calgarians to express their true identity is integral to the collective social, mental and economic wellbeing of our city. The FascinAsian Film Festival provides this much needed and appreciated opportunity for creative expression and discussion.
