Join us for an engaging Q&A session with filmmaker Gloria Kim, hosted by ACTRA Manitoba member, Stephanie Sy. Stephanie and Gloria will discuss the various topics explored in Gloria’s film Queen of the Morning Calm. In the aftermath of the Atlanta shootings and the wave of recent Anti-Asian hate, the discussion of cycles of poverty experienced by many Asian immigrants, stories of the Asian diaspora, and the subject of Asian fetishism is as relevant as ever.

Stephanie Sy (she/her) is an actor, aspiring director, and writer. She was born and raised on Treaty 1 Territory, Winnipeg. Her career began on stage, predominantly in musical theatre/theatre and has worked across Canada and the U.S. Since 2016, Stephanie has transitioned her focus to Film and Television. FascinAsian - Gloria Kim


Born in Seoul, Korea, writer/director Gloria Ui Young Kim is an alumni of the Canadian Film Centre’s Director’s Lab, TIFF Talent Lab and NSI. She recently directed, wrote and produced her first feature, QUEEN OF THE MORNING CALM, which won the Women in the Director’s Chair Feature Film Award, the William F. White Reel Canadian Indie, the DGC Ontario Best Director Award, Special Jury Best Breakthrough Performance Award at the Canadian Film Festival; Best Director Award at CineFAM; it premiered at the 2019 Whistler Film Festival. She’s won numerous Golds for her commercials and is the recipient of the Corus Fearless Female Filmmaker Award, was one of Women in View’s Five in Focus 2017 and has directed multiple episodes of television. Most recently, she directed for the hit series Coroner (CBC), an MOW for Lifetime and is on the Board of Women in Film and Television-Toronto.
